Most of them were established before the turn
of the century, for example Padstow, established prior to 1825. With the
advent of pleasure boating, this has led to new stations being formed, such
as Rock in 1994. They are equipped with various types of lifeboats ranging
from the powerful Severn Class with a top speed of 25 knots, the 16 knot
Mersey. There are also a number of inflatables, from the 33 knot Atlantic
75 to the D class with a speed of 20 knots

The establishment of a station, and the allocation of a
particular type of boat, will depend upon the type of coastline to be
covered as well as the availability of volunteers to man it. Here in Cornwall
we have all types of launching facilities ranging from slipway at the
Lizard, through the carriage launch of the St.lves boat to the afloat
boat at Falmouth.
