Cornwall has the longest coastline of any county also has the largest number of lifeboat stations, fifteen in all (including the Isles of Scilly). The county is part of the RNLI's South Division, which covers the lifeboat stations from Weston-super-Mare to Mudeford (including the Channel Islands). There are nine divisions in Great Britain and Ireland.

Most of them were established before the turn of the century, for example Padstow, established prior to 1825. With the advent of pleasure boating, this has led to new stations being formed, such as Rock in 1994. They are equipped with various types of lifeboats ranging from the powerful Severn Class with a top speed of 25 knots, the 16 knot Mersey. There are also a number of inflatables, from the 33 knot Atlantic 75 to the D class with a speed of 20 knots

The establishment of a station, and the allocation of a particular type of boat, will depend upon the type of coastline to be covered as well as the availability of volunteers to man it. Here in Cornwall we have all types of launching facilities ranging from slipway at the Lizard, through the carriage launch of the St.lves boat to the afloat boat at Falmouth.

These are of course supported by the inflatables, which are launched by various means. It is worth pointing out that all of our all-weather boats are self-righting. The Atlantic 75 and 21 are fitted with an inflatable bag for self-righting and also have night capabilities.
