FALMOUTH HARBOUR COMMISSIONERS

The Falmouth Harbour Commissioners were formed by Act of Parliament in 1870 and charged with the management of the Harbour and fulfilling the statutory conservancy duties required. The Acts and Orders have been updated numerous times since then, modernising the constitution of the Commissioners and adjusting rates as well as more recently extending the Harbour limits. The current Harbour Area extends out some three miles to seaward, includes the Southern part of Carrick Roads and the Eastern section of the Penryn River. In total the Harbour Area comprises approximately 16 square miles. Falmouth Harbour has a proud history as a commercial port and has working quays dating back to the 17th Century. In modern times it has achieved importance as a deep water harbour facilitating ship repair and bunkering. There is also an expanding use for leisure sailing activities.

Falmouth Harbour is run as a Trust Port which is an independent statutory body, commercially run and required to reinvest all profits back into the Port. The Port is managed by a Board of 7 Trustees and the day to day operations are undertaken by a team of 17 full time staff. Additional seasonal staff are employed during the summer months to assist with managing the leisure facilities.

Whilst it cannot be classed as an emergency service, the Organisation has played a prominent role in a number of maritime incidents. Falmouth is a popular choice as a port of refuge for ships seeking shelter or repairs due to its location offering sheltered deep water and the proximity of repair facilities. We maintain a first class Admiralty mooring in the Cross Roads which has often been a nominated "place of safety" where Salvors may terminate their salvage services.
